Cool Kids Club will kick off its summer season May 31, offering area youth a place to have fun and learn through the hot summer days.
According to CKC Director, Colleen Langdon, CKC began in October 2001 when school administrators from Sidney and Chadron wrote a joint grant to begin a before, after and summer school program in their communities. A $1.5 million three-year grant was awarded under the "No Child Left Behind" federal initiative.
"Our vision statement is 'children will have a safe and productive place to learn and grow when school is not in session, and the results will be that our youth will learn, care, act and excel,' " Langdon said.
In the beginning, CKC was only for K through third grade. Langdon later wrote a grant to expand the program to include all grades.
