City saves money on upcoming project

City Council met Tuesday for its bimonthly meeting in Sidney dispatching busines with Councilman Joe Arterburn being excused.

Council has saved the city $100,000 with the upcoming construction on a pipeline project with Paul Reed Construction and Diamondback Engineering to replace current water pipeline along link 17 J with 16-inch water pipe.

Council members had previously tabled a bid from Diamondback Engineering, opening up the opportunity for new bids. Diamondback engineering came back to council with a new bid $100,000 less than previously bid.

Regarding the pipeline’s construction work, Councilman Wendall Gaston the city has worked with Paul Reed Construction, which was part of the bid package, for more than 20 years. Paul Reed Construction has completed six jobs for city in the past five years with positive results.

Council approved final payment to Diamondback engineering for its work on the East Booster station. Assistant City Manager, Dawn Martin, said the booster station has been regulating temperatures well and temperatures are not exceeding limits. The station has worked well for more than 500 hours.

Cool Kids club kids, along with director, Colleen Langdon presented a “Lights On After School” proclamation, asking mayor Mark Nienhueser to proclaim Oct. 20 as “Lights on After School Day” in Sidney. Nienhueser moved to proclaim Oct. 20 as “Lights on After School day” in Sidney.

A contract with Front Range Research Associates was approved to perform an intensive level survey on US Highway30/Illinois street corridor. This survey is being done as a result of Sidney receiving a grant for the Historic Preservation Board.

The survey is set to be finished in May of 2017 and will provide photo documentation of properties. The photos will be given to state preservation office and can be used to designate properties as historic.
