Sidney High School Emma Alexander is returning to the Nebraska State Girls Golf Tournament, after working her way to second place in district play Monday in Sidney.
Girls golfers from across the region fought a stiff south wind from the onset of play at Sidney's Hillside Golf Course, and scores showed it.
Teeing off straight into the wind to begin the tournament, Alexander put up a decent round of 42, but also finished strong with a 40 coming in.
Scottsbluff's Shelby Poynter, who has ruled play throughout the season, has nearly always been good for a par round. But even Poynter's 78 were evidence of the tough conditions, where winds over 40 mph and dried the greens to where they ran like racetrack speeds.
"I think all the coaches agreed the scores were higher than expected," said Sidney Coach Jeff Yahn. "The playing conditions were pretty rough."
Yahn said Alexander played an excellent back nine, with a birdie on the final hole.
It was a rough day in some aspects for Sidney players, including Tiara Ginther, who missed being in the medals by one stroke.
"With the weather conditions, I felt like the girls did very well," Yahn said.
Gering clipped Sidney in the race for third, holding the Lady Raiders out of a team trip to state. McCook's 374 allowed the Lady Bison to edge Scottsbluff out for the team title. Scottsbluff shot 376 as a team.
Alexander will join other golfers across the state next weekend at the Class B state tournament Oct. 10-11 at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus.
