Sidney student tops all in range judging competition

Sidney High School senior Seth McMillen took top honors in the individual Senior Division Area Range Judging contest held north of Dix last week. McMillen's individual score of 420 topped second place finisher Ethan Aschenbrenner from Scottsbluff High School by 10 points.

McMillen's and Aschenbrenner's scores helped their teams come in first and second in the overall senior division team competition, but it was Aschenbrenner's Scottsbluff team that took first place 1191 to Sidney's 1172. Creek Valley came in third in the senior division team competition with a score of 1041. Billy Tiddyman from Chadron High School took third place in the senior division individual competition with a score of 394.

Competition was also held for the junior division, which includes students from ninth and 10th grades while the senior division is made up of students from the 11th and 12th grades.

In the junior division team competition, Gordon-Rushville took first and second place with scores of 1270 and 1017 with Chadron taking third with a score of 971. Individually the top four honors went to students from Gordon-Rushville with Kenna Rose taking first with a score of 460, with teammates Berklie Haag taking second with a score of 414 and Jarret Pieper taking fourth with a score of 396. Reann Ferguson from Gordon-Rushville's second place team came in third with an individual score of 397.

Thirty-three teams from 10 different schools were represented at this year's Range Judging contest, 14 in senior division and 19 in junior division. The schools represented included Scottsbluff, Sidney, Creek Valley, Gordon-Rushville, Banner County, Kimball, Bridgeport, Chadron, Leyton, and Perkins County. Teams now have the chance to participate in the State Range Judging contest to be held near Lincoln on September 28.

Volunteer help for this year's competition were from the University of Nebraska Extension, NRCS, and all three Panhandle NRD's, the Upper Niobrara White, North Platte, and South Platte.
