Sidney High students bid on jerseys
Students gathered in the Performing Arts Center early Wednesday morning for a chance to bid on their favorite football players jersey.
Sidney High School (SHS) cheerleaders held their annual jersey auction before classes began Wednesday morning as part of Sidney's Homecoming week.
Cheerleading Coach Abby Green said the proceeds from the auction go to the cheerleader's expenses. Expenses such as uniforms, traveling expenses and their trip to state competition held annually in Grand Island.
This year's SHS squad is made up of 15 members, six of whom are returning cheerleaders and nine who are new to the squad, Green said.
The squad practices twice a week all year, except for two weeks in April before the new squad is announced.
Green and Co-Coach Tessa Janssen have been cheerleading coaches for three years at Sidney High School and have plans to return to state in February.
"This is a newer squad, so we have only competed at state once," Green said.
Homecoming week is a big time for the squad, Green said, the girls have been practicing with the SHS Dance Team for a performance during half-time at the homecoming game Friday.
"We will also be helping with the bonfire and class games," Green said.
Green noted that the cheerleaders and the other girls who purchased jerseys at the auction will be seen wearing the jersey on Friday at school, as well as at the football game.
