Grand Marshals for the Lodgepole Old Settlers' Days Reunion have been announced. Preston Richards and Tammy Sherman will preside over the event's 92nd year.
Grand Marshal Preston Richards is the youngest of seven children born to Albert and Stella (Gilliam)Richards. He was born June 2, 1950 in Sidney. Richards graduated from Lodgepole High School in 1968, during which time he worked at Zalesky's Petroleum gas station. After graduation, Richards traveled to Anchorage, Alaska where he started working for the Universal Services until 1972.
In 1974 Richards married Nancy Bondegard in Kearney, where Bondegard was attending college. The couple went back to Alaska for five years before returning to Nebraska in 1979 where Richards worked for Union Pacific. Richards returned to Alaska one last time before purchasing the Conoco Station in Lodgepole with his wife in 1984.
Richards began to work for the Village of Lodgepole in 1990, where he is presently employed. Richards continued to work at the Conoco station until it was sold it in 1993.
Preston and Nancy have four children and six grandchildren. Their children, Tausha and Krishna, were born in Alaska and Kami and Aaron were born in Nebraska.
Grand Marshal Tammy Sherman grew up in Ogallala and moved to the area in 1997. She graduated from Ogallala High School in 1984 and attended college at Kearney State where she graduated in 1988. Sherman has one brother. He and his family live in Ogallala. Sherman's father resides in Brule, Neb. Sherman went to work for Adams Bank and Trust in 1997 and transferred to Lodgepole in 1999.
In 2006 Sherman started as the Village Clerk of Lodgepole. Tammy and her husband John have two sons, Greg and Jeff.
"It is quiet an honor to be selected as a representative of the Village of Lodgepole. The residents of Lodgepole hold a sense of strength and independence that a person is proud to be associated with," said Sherman.
Old Settlers' Days will be held in Lodgepole Friday, Sept. 2 through Monday, Sept. 5.
