Donna met Chuck Mayer in her senior year of high school. The two were wed in the summer of 1953, after she graduated from Potter High. They moved to the Mayer homestead, west of Dalton Nebraska, and spent 19 years working on the farm. The couple had three boys during that time, Milton, Kim, and Robin. Milton passed away in January of 1960.

Chuck began his own aerial spray service in 1961. In the fall of 1972, the family moved east to Malcolm Nebraska where they became incorporated with a local aerial applicator. Donna flagged fields for Chuck to spray, and learned how to fly. They later built a home by Kramer to continue the aerospray business. Donna also raised registered Landrace hogs. She has spoken fondly of this time of her life, chasing hogs and boys, flying and flagging fields, and taking family trips. Following Chuck's stroke in 1985, Donna went to work at Crete Public Schools as a custodian. She retired in 2000. The couple moved to Clatonia in 1988.

Donna was a social butterfly, dedicating herself to several groups and clubs. In her later years, she was involved in the Red Hat Society and United Methodist Women, amongst others. She enjoyed traveling and experiencing new foods and activities. She especially took pleasure in a trip to Europe with the family in 2011.She adored her family and friends, and relished visiting with anyone and everyone. Donna was truly one of a kind.
