Grain truck struck by train

A Loaded grain truck was struck by a train when it stalled on the tracks near Gurley Wednesday night.

According to the Cheyenne County Sheriffs office accident report, a Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train with thirty five cars and two engines was traveling north on a single track at approximately 46 miles an hour, when it struck the tractor trailer driven by Herbert Beck of Greenville North Carolina.

Cheyenne County Sheriff John Jensen said, “the driver was out of the vehicle at the time of the collision.”

Loaded with wheat, the tractor trailer stalled on the tracks near County Road 46, west of Hwy. 385. The driver of the vehicle stated he could not get it re-started.

Jensen said the accident split the grain trailer in half.

Clean-up crews spent a few hours on site, with heavy equipment operators removing the wreck from the train tracks.

“The trains were held up for about six hours, train flow began again around 1:30 a.m.,” Jensen said.

No damage was reported to the train engine or operator. The tractor trailer was reported to be a total loss.
