A Sidney bicyclist was transported to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff Wednesday after he was clipped by the edge of a semi truck.
According to the Cheyenne County Sheriffs office, a semi and trailer were headed east bound on Hwy. 30, when the driver of the semi, 40 year old David McKnight, observed a cyclist on the south edge of the road who was also east bound.
McKnight attempted to move to the center line of the road however, with oncoming traffic he was unable to move safely away from the cyclist.
“The semi driver tried to hug the center line, but clipped the bicycle with the front right corner of the semi,” Cheyenne County Sheriff John Jenson said.
The accident occurred at approximately 6 a.m. Wednesday, near mile marker 67 east of Sidney.
Cyclist was identified as Jeffery Phelps of Sidney. Phelps was taken to Regional West Medical Center, where he is still listed as a patient.
Jensen said “it it my understanding that Phelps sustained a broken left arm.”
Jensen said especially on a road like Hwy. 30 that has no shoulder, both bicyclists and vehicles need to be diligent with safety.
Jensen said the investigation is still active, and has been turned over to the county attorney. No citations were issued on the scene.
