Spreading the Spirit of the Cornhusker Games with torch run

Spreading the spirit of the games Cornhusker State Games, runners from the Cheyenne County area relayed a torch from Dalton to the Cheyenne County Community Center Tuesday.

According to Kiersten Richards, activities director at Cheyenne County Community Center, there were 18 runners, with each participant running at least one mile.

"For some this is their first time participating, and others are veteran torch runners," Richards said, "this is our eighth year participating in the run."

Cornhusker State Games Torch run spans the state. It began in Omaha on June 6 and ends in Lincoln on June 21.

The Cornhusker State Games is a statewide amateur sports festival for all Nebraskans. The purpose of the Games is to provide amateur competition in a wide range of activities. The 2016 Games are scheduled for July 15-24 at more than 70 sites in Lincoln, Omaha and surrounding communities.

Cornhusker State Games originated in 1985 and offered 19 sports that attracted 4,000 participants. The 2015 State Games of America, which replaced the Cornhusker State Games last summer, attracted 15,244 participants from 47 states.

The games offer a wide range of competitions from traditional Olympic sports such as Gymnastics and Swimming to events such as Horseshoe Pitching and Chess.

Pat Hagedorn works for the Nebraska Sports council, he said the Cornhusker games is one of the events the group organizes to promote health and wellness and encourage healthy lifestyles.

"There are 67 different games, each with a different registration fee," said Hagedorn, "registration deadline for the games is June 22."

Lisa and Dan Schumacher ran the last leg of the run in Sidney the couple ran 2.8 miles.

"It was a little hot, but it was fun," Schumacher said, "we will do it again next year."

Hagedorn said, Bridgeport to Sidney was third run of eight legs. The torch will travel from Ogallala to North Platte Wednesday, Hastings to Grand island Thursday, Columbus to Norfolk on Friday and will finish up June 21 in a leg from Seward to Lincoln.
