Duane R. Brunner, 79, of New Smyrna Beach, FL died Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Halifax Health Medical Center, Daytona Beach, FL. Mr. Brunner was born June 28, 1936 to Harold P. and Mabel Siefer Brunner in Dalton, NE. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, majoring in soil conservation. He was an avid Nebraska Corn Husker fan and was a prior player for their football team in the early 1950's. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Era and served in Germany, Italy, Korea and Vietnam as an artillery surveyor and administrator retiring as Sergeant Major with 24 years of service. After his Army retirement, he worked as a land surveyor for the Lawton, OK City Engineering Department for 17 years during which time he was involved in restoring, setting and surveying over 500 high order survey control points in Southwest Oklahoma. He also filed over 100 survey land corners many of which are in the Oklahoma State and National Surveying Archives. He moved to the Edgewater/New Smyrna Beach, FL area in 2008 from Lawton, OK and was a member of VFW Post #4250, New Smyrna Beach and American Legion Post #285, Edgewater. He was also a life member of DAV Post #56 and the Vietnam Veterans of America Post #751, both in Lawton and member of Fort Sill Oklahoma Sergeant Major Association and Oklahoma Society of Land Surveyors. Survivors include one son, Jerry (Penny) Brunner of Bellwood, PA; one daughter, Jackie (Clyde) Terwilliger of New Smyrna Beach; four grandchildren, Matt and Troy Brunner, Jessica Thomas and Zachary Terwilliger and one great grandson, Miles Brunner. Funeral service will be 7 PM Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at Dudley Funeral Home, New Smyrna Beach with military honors by the American Legion Post #285, Edgewater. Private burial will be Thursday, June 2, 2016 at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, Mims, FL. Visitation will be from 5 PM until the service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.
