Micahla Beyer of Sidney was recently named the recipient of the Esprit de Corps award at the ServeNebraska Symposium on May 6.
Lincoln, NE – Micahla Beyer of Sidney was recently named the recipient of the Esprit de Corps award at the ServeNebraska Symposium on May 6. National service volunteers were recognized for their commitment to making a difference in their communities.
Beyer is a member of ExtensionCorps, Nebraska Extension's AmeriCorps program. She teaches youth in Cheyenne, Kimball, and Banner counties about science, technology, engineering, and math concepts.
The Esprit de Corps award honors an AmeriCorps member who best represents in spirit loyalty, enthusiasm, and devotion to national service and in support of his or her program. Five finalists from across the state were selected for this award.
"Micahla's enthusiasm for National Service and 4-H has made her a favorite in our area for programming," said Cynthia Gill, Extension educator and Micahla's mentor.
Beyer has taught programs to youth that focus on topics like robotics, dairy foods, and how STEM can be embedded into the arts. Currently, Micahla is coordinating a nine-week summer camp that features workshops in entrepreneurship, gardening, robotics, and sewing for over 150 youth.
"Micahla has been a model ExtensionCorps member, and she is deserving of this award," said Ashley Mueller, ExtensionCorps program leader. "She thinks about the big picture of national service, takes pride in serving her community, and knows her efforts are truly making a difference for others."
ExtensionCorps helps Nebraska Extension extend its reach in communities across the state. ExtensionCorps members provide direct service to youth and communities through science education and nutrition education. Eight volunteers serve in 10 counties during this service year. ServeNebraska, the Nebraska Volunteer Service Commission, coordinates and supports community involvement by Nebraskans that address the needs of communities. They coordinate AmeriCorps programming, celebrate volunteer achievements through quarterly and annual awards, provide training and technical assistance, and work to ensure that those with disabilities are fully involved.
