Leyton Class of 2016 Valedictorian – Katelyn Higgins

Katelyn Higgins described herself as "extremely blessed" to be named the Leyton High School Class of 2016 valedictorian.

"I have spent countless hours studying, reading and learning new material so that I could someday reach this goal," she said.

Katelyn, 17, is the daughter of Robert and Lianne Higgins. She is from Dalton and has two younger sisters, Danielle and Elizabeth.

Through her high school career, she has participated, and lettered, in volleyball and speech for four years, receiving Academic All-State honors in both, as well as in track and basketball for three years.

She has also been involved in student council for two years, the National Honor Society for three years, the Lettermen's Club for three years and served as it president during her senior year, and was a member of the 2015 Nebraska Ambassadors of Music program.

In addition, Katelyn has been an active member of the Cheyenne County 4-H for ten years, and was the recipient of the 2015 Outstanding 4-H Member award.

Even with the numerous activities in which she participated, Katelyn said one sacrifice she has always made is putting her schoolwork first.

"There were many times where I would want to go out with my friends or watch TV," she said. "But I knew that if I ever wanted to reach my goal of becoming valedictorian or salutatorian, I would need to dedicate myself to my studies."

Katelyn said she was "exceptionally lucky to have a great support system on her path to becoming her class's valedictorian.

"And I would have not been able to reach this goal without my family or teachers," she said. "I am truly grateful for everyone who has helped me come this far, and I cannot wait to see what my future holds for me."

Looking back at the past four years of high school, Katelyn said that time would be something she would always cherish.

"Inside the four walls of my school, I have made countless memories and friends," she said. "The time went by extremely fast, but the memories I have made will last me a lifetime."

This fall, Katelyn will attend the University of Nebraska - Lincoln where she will major in nutrition, exercise and health sciences. She said she plans to do pursue medical school in her post-graduate studies to eventually receive her doctorate in physical therapy.

"I was injured many times throughout my high school career, and I had an incredible physical therapist who stood by my side and helped me overcome my obstacles," Katelyn said. "I am very grateful for my physical therapist because without her, I would have never found my dream to become a physical therapist myself."

With the Leyton High School Class of 2016 commencement ceremony just around the corner, Katelyn said she is excited about giving her address to her fellow classmates.

"I can remember as a little girl wanting to give a message to my class," she said. "I believe that it is an honor to speak, and it's not something I will take for granted. I have put a lot of thought into what I would like to talk about, and I'm excited to start writing."

As she prepares for the next chapter in her life, Katelyn's advice to incoming high school freshmen was simple: "Enjoy it."

"High school goes by tremendously fast, and before you know it, everything is over," she said. "Become involved in your school, and always strive to do your best. Education can take you anywhere in life.

"Cherish the memories and don't count down the day until it's over. Enjoy each day as it comes."
