Gordon Glassburn

1922 to 2016

Gordon Dale Glassburn, 93, of Rapid City, S.D., passed away Monday, April 25, 2016, at the Custer Regional Senior Care in Custer, S.D.

Gordon was born July 7, 1922 on a farm south of Sunol to Hubert and Maude Glassburn. Six children blessed their marriage, which Gordon was the fifth child. As a teenager, his brothers and he broke horses for the Calvary at Fort Robinson during WWI and WWII.

After high school, Gordon wanted to join the war but due to an asthma attack at the enlistment office, he was sent home to farm alongside his parents, sisters, and younger brother. Gordon’s two older brothers went on to serve in the military.

Gordon was the first member to be married in the newly built Lutheran Church in Lodgepole. Gordon married Jean Hippen in 1956 and were married for 50 years.

Gordon and Jean owned Glassburn’s Gift & Floral until they moved to Denver in 1978. In Denver, they managed apartment buildings. They retired to Commerce City, Colo..

Gordon enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and rock collecting.

He leaves behind four children, Brenda (Tim) Ramey, Sterling, Colo., Barb (Don) Miles, Rapid City, S.D., Brad Glassburn, Brandon, S.D., Beth (Emory) Oliverus, Lodgepole; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean; three brothers; two sisters; and a grandson.

Private family services will be held.
