WNCC to host 2016 High School District Music Contest

The 2016 NSAA District VI Music Contest will be held at Western Nebraska Community College on Apr. 21, 2016.

More than 800 vocal and instrumental musicians, representing 12 area high school systems, will compete for ratings throughout the day. Sharon Hoffman of Bayard is the contest coordinator; Dr. Nathaniel Johnson and Dr. Imgyu Kang of the WNCC Music Program are the site coordinators.

Participating schools include Banner County, Bayard, Bridgeport, Gering, Kimball, Leyton, Minatare, Mitchell, Morrill, Potter-Dix, Scottsbluff, and Sioux County.

District contest begins at 8 a.m. on the WNCC Scottsbluff Campus. All

choruses perform in the Assembly of God church; concert bands and orchestra in the WNCC Little Theatre; and show choirs and jazz bands in the Harms Advanced Technology Center.

Solos and small ensembles perform in various classrooms across the WNCC Campus.

The schedule of each school’s events will be posted liberally around campus, and can be viewed at wncc.edu/events/districtmusic.

Twelve judges representing Alliance, Bayard, Bridgeport, Chadron, Gering, Scottsbluff, and Sutherland in Nebraska, and Torrington in Wyoming adjudicate this annual event.

Musicians compete for a rating based on a standard of musical excellence. A rating of (I) represents superior or outstanding work; (II) represents excellent work; (III) represents a good or average performance; (IV) indicates below average work; and a (V) indicates a poor performance.

Award certificates are presented to those solos, small ensembles, and large ensembles earning a superior rating. Plaques are awarded to large ensembles earning a unanimous superior rating from all three judges.

One Outstanding Performance and two Honorable Mention Performance awards may be selected by each judge for solo and small ensemble excellence during the day.

The contest is free and open to the public. Concessions are available throughout the day in Cougar Palace.
