Sidney High School students and the community will be getting the opportunity to experience and learn about hispanic culture next week when the school hosts Cultural Expressions, an event which will feature art, dance and poetry influenced by Chicano traditions.
In December, 15 students won first place for creating a mural and an accompanying skit at a cultural expressions competition in Denver. The event was sponsored by the Journey through our Heritage program, under the Metropolitan State University of Denver's Chicano/Chicana Studies Department.
The students worked on the project during open and lunch periods, after school, weekends and evenings.
"We estimated more then 200 hours collectively went into the project" said Brett Avila, Spanish teacher and "Cultural Advocate" at Sidney High School.
During their regular January meeting, student Sonya Virgil told Sidney School District board members about the work she and her fellow schoolmates did for both the skit and mural.
"It was good for all of us to come together and express our ideas," she said.
The students will be presenting the award winning mural "Orgullo" as well as the skit "Breaking Stereotypes" at the Cultural Expressions event.
Three poems written by Sidney students will also be presented for the first time to the public that evening.
Sidney students Alfredo Balandran Jr., Melissa Rodriguez and Anjelica Wooley submitted the poems to The Journey Through our Heritage program in February.
Graduate students and other presenters from the Metropolitan State University of Denver will be on site to speak and interact and with students and the community.
The event will begin during fourth period for Sidney High School students with an all-school assembly presented in both English and Spanish.
"That will be an abbreviated version of what the performance will be that evening," Avila said.
Cultural Expressions will be held Wednesday, April 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Sidney High School Performing Arts Center. The community is encouraged to attend the event.
