Potter-Dix, Creek Valley earn girls finals berths

Potter-Dix and Creek Valley each won in the girls basketball semifinals of the MAC Tournament on Thursday. The two teams will face each other in the finals at 8 p.m. Saturday at Sidney Middle School.

Potter-Dix 53, Bayard 38

Potter-Dix advanced to the championship game of the Minuteman Activities Conference Tournament for the second consecutive year with a 53-38 win over Bayard on Thursday at the Sidney Middle School Gym.

The top-seeded Lady Coyotes, last year's champions, will now face third-seeded Creek Valley in the tournament title game at 8 p.m. Saturday in the SMS Gym.

Against Bayard, Potter-Dix (11-1) took control early en route to the win. The Lady Coyotes outscored the Lady Tigers (4-11) 26-13 in the first half and also 27-25 in the second half.

Eight Lady Coyotes found the scoring column, led by 10 points each from Brooke Glass and Audrey Juelfs. Dawson Sharman and Trinity Langley also had 8 points each.

Kaylie Fiscus led the Lady Tigers offensively with 12 points, while Jess Smith chipped in with 9 points.

Creek Valley 41, Leyton 35

Creek Valley jumped out to the early lead and held off Leyton to win, 41-35, in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament Thursday at the SMS Gym.

The third-seeded Storm (9-5) will now face top-seeded Potter-Dix in the championship tilt at 8 p.m. Saturday in the SMS Gym. The second-seeded Lady Warriors (7-5) fall to the consolation round and will face fourth-seeded Bayard at 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

The Storm raced out to a 12-5 first quarter lead and built a 24-19 advantage at halftime. They extended the lead to 38-30 heading into the final period of play, but the Lady Warriors could only cut into the lead by two points.

Jessie Straber led Creek Valley offensively with 14 points, while Samantha Schmid chipped in with 10. Payje Misegadis narrowly missed a double-double with 9 points and a team-high 15 rebounds in the game. Jordyn Koenen also grabbed 14 boards.

Rebounding gave the Storm the edge on Thursday, as they grabbed 44 boards compared to just 31 for the Lady Warriors. Twenty of Creek Valley's rebounds came on the offensive end of the floor.

Diedra Waite had a double-double to lead the Lady Warriors with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Natalie Cruise also chipped in with 9 points and 9 rebounds in the game.
