The Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office is hosting an event to benefit a deputy shot in early December in nearby Deuel County.
Sheriff John Jenson said his office wants to do what it can to support Deuel County Sheriff's Deputy Mike Hutchinson.
"We understand what a family goes through when somebody is injured," Jenson said.
A pancake feed and 5K walk and run will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Cheyenne County Fairgrounds, with all proceeds going to the Hutchinson family.
Pancakes, scrambled eggs, juice and coffee will be served, with a freewill donation, beginning at 7 a.m. and continuing until 11. The walk will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the run at 8:15. Both have a $20 entry free.
Jenson said participants in the 5K can register on the day of the event.
Fire pits will also set up around the fairgrounds to keep people warm.
Hutchinson, a 25-year law enforcement veteran, was shot in Big Springs on Dec. 3 while attempting to serve warrants on a 66-year-old man.
According to a Facebook page created by his family, Hutchinson was shot in his left lung, right chest, abdomen and thigh. A bullet also narrowly missed his aorta.
While insurance will cover the medical costs, Jenson said his recovery will entail additional expenses for his family.
"They have a long road in front of them," Jenson said. "This is a way to help our family of law enforcement get through this."
