Sidney's Seth McMillen battles a competitor in the heavyweight class at Gothenburg on Friday. McMillen took first place in his class at both Gothenburg and Cozad over the weekend.
Sidney's Red Raider wrestling team opened up the 2015-16 season over the weekend with a number of wins at the Gothenburg and Cozad invitational meets.
At the Gothenburg meet on Friday, seven Sidney wrestlers took first place victories.
At 106 pounds, Trey Arellano took a win by pin, while Kaden Vowers bested his competition in the 113-pound class on a 3-1 decision.
Last year's state champion, Derek Robb, pinned his opponent in the 152-pound class and 170-pounder Isaiah Votruba cruised to an easy victory by pin late in the day.
Nathan Cuelo (152), Cody Hofrock (220) and Seth McMillen (HWT) also took victories with pins in the match.
Sidney at Cozad
The Red Raiders journeyed to Cozad on Saturday – and saw a repeat of first-place performances from a number of Sidney wrestlers.
It was another day of wins for Arellano as he took a first-place, 24 -point finish over Seward's Miguel Dubs, courtesy of a fall at 4:26 in the match.
Vowers also logged another top-spot finish after he won a 10-7 decision over Zach Trumble of Aurora.
Earning 22 points and another first-place spot, Votruba won by a 8-3 decision over Gothenburg's Tyler Miller.
In one of the closest matches of the day, Robb took second place to Adams Central's Marc Zesker on a 7-6 decision.
Sidney's head coach, John Ganser, said he was pleased with how the weekend turned out for his team.
"Our meets were exciting and it was a huge team effort that was fun for all of us," Ganser said.
The Sidney wrestlers will travel to Gordon-Rushville High School on Saturday to compete in the GRHS Wrestling Invitational.
