From the sports desk: Here's to the winter season

When the temperature gets colder and we all venture inside for the winter sports season, there is a lot we can look forward to on the basketball courts and wrestling mats of Cheyenne and Deuel counties and in Peetz.

There is nothing quite as exciting, for me, as the raucous and loud environment that basketball season brings. From the sounds of the pep band, to the taste of way too many hot dogs, to the sweat growing on the brow of head coaches deep into a game, hoops rules the day every December.

By the same token, wrestling season is just as exciting; the difference between a gold medal performance and a bronze can be as little as two points in a decision.

I have to give a lot of thanks to the players, parents and especially the coaches who have made my life easier in the past few weeks by getting me information and photos to get the winter sports preview guide started. It will be out the first week of December, and I hope it will be an awesome representation of athletics in the county.

I can't wait for the first tip-off and Sidney's opening grapple of the 2015-16 season. There is so much skill linked to both sports and will be good to watch the student-athletes do their thing.

Here's to an awesome winter season.
