Robb, Sidney Wrestling Club win big in Denver at Monster Match Nationals

The Sidney Wrestling Club came up with some big wins last Saturday at the Monster Match National competition in Denver – and saw state high school champion Derek Robb take a second place finish in the 18-under, 152-pound class.

Robb began his silver medal push by defeating Tanner Medi in a 4-1 decision, Patrick Williams on fall after just 57 seconds, Alejandro Gandara on a fall in 1:41 and advanced to the championship match with a 6-1 decision over Montana's Jordan Komac.

With five consecutive wins under his belt, Robb drew Californian Tyler Meisinger in a battle for first place. It was a close and enduring fight, with Meisinger barely eking past Robb on an 11-9 decision.

The loss in the championship sent Robb to the consolation match for second or third place – and the sophomore from Sidney High School didn't have to work too hard for a No. 2 finish after Nathan Hunt of Cornhusker Wrestling Club forfeited the match.

Robb won the Class B state title at 138 pounds last season as a freshman at the Nebraska State Wrestling Championships in Omaha. He finished his first season with a perfect 45-0 record and was the first state champion from Sidney since Nolan Jenkins won a title at 125 pounds in 1999.

Three other Sidney WC wrestlers, Zechariah Roggasch, Tyson Boppre and Johnny Vargas finished in fourth place in their classes. Hunter Welling, a native of Crawford who is wrestling with Sidney this season, took a fifth place finish.
