The Friends of the Sidney Public Library will celebrate National Friends of the Library Week from Oct. 18-24.
To kick off the week, the group is hosting an edible book contest. Edible creations can take any form, but must have a literary theme.
There are categories for adults and children. The grand prize includes a family movie and snack pass to Fox Theater, with prizes to winners of the adult’s and children’s categories as well.
All entries are due at the library by Saturday, Oct. 17 at 10:30 a.m. Judging will be completed at noon, after which the creations will be available for sampling. The public is welcome to attend and take a look at the creations. For more information, stop by the library.
The Friends of the Sidney Public Library were established in 2007, and have raised more than $20,000 for the library to date. The “Friends” always welcome new members who have an interest in supporting the Sidney Public Library and promoting literacy throughout the community. Learn more by attending the group’s next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9 at the Sidney Public Library, 1112 12th Ave.
The group promotes children’s literacy, and will host the third annual Dr. Seuss Birthday Bash in March to encourage children and families to come to the library for fun Seuss-filled activities. The group recently distributed children’s books to area businesses with its annual Back to School Book Drive. It also sponsors the annual summer reading program which encourages children and adults to while away the long days with a good book.
“Friends of the Sidney Public Library hosts great activities to promote a love of reading while supporting the library,” said Lisa Davis, president of Friends of the Sidney Public Library. “We are excited to host an edible book contest, and hope it will attract new people to the library.”
Other officers of the organization are Julia Kalinowski, vice president; Cheryl Farmer, secretary; and Charlotte Steffens, treasurer.
