Leyton tops South Platte; Peetz, Potter-Dix, Creek Valley all fall

The Leyton High School football team picked up its first win of the season on Friday night, defeating South Platte, 58-32.
The visiting Warriors opened a 24-6 lead after one quarter and extended it to 38-12 by the intermission. Two more touchdowns in the third quarter pushed their lead to 52-12 before the hosts outscored them 20-6 in the final stanza.
Leyton senior Kordell Maestas was the workhorse for his team, running for 269 yards and four touchdowns on 27 carries. His longest run of the night was for 64 yards.
Leyton improved to 1-4, while the Blue Knights slipped to 2-3.
The Warriors’ senior quarterback Rhett Dye connected on 5 of 9 passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns. One of the scoring strikes was to Zach Hellie, while the other went to Morley Haley.
Haley also ran the ball 15 times for 67 yards and found the end zone two more times on the ground.
Junior Teagan Brogren, Hellie and Haley all had eight tackles apiece to pace the defense. Dye added an interception.
The Warriors travel to Hay Springs (1-4) on Friday night for a Class D2 District 10 contest.
Fleming 64, Peetz 24
Peetz got off to a slow start, surrendering three first-half touchdowns and falling behind 20-0 by the intermission.
Jordan Nelson paced Peetz’s rushing attack with 178 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Quarterback Wolf Wenneker was 5 of 15 passing for 127 yards with one TD and one interception.
The loss dropped Peetz to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Colorado Class A North 6-man standings. Fleming stayed unbeaten at 5-0 and 4-0 in league action.
Cody Wilson and Helmuth Wenneker had 13 tackles apiece for the Peetz defense.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. at home against Briggsdale (3-2) for their Homecoming game.
Perkins County 92,
Creek Valley 0
Creek Valley suffered another big loss, falling to 0-5 this season.
The Storm fell behind 38-0 after the opening quarter and trailed 51-0 at halftime. The Plainsmen then added six second-half touchdowns.
Noah Dickerson was Creek Valley’s leading rusher with 37 yards on 13 carries. Quarterback Pierce Leef was 8-for-24 passing for 73 yards and two interceptions. Sophomore Michael Smith led the way on defense with six tackles for the Storm.
The Storm returns to action at home on Friday night against Morrill (2-3) for a Class D1 District 10 game.
Crawford 44, Potter-Dix 8
Potter-Dix fell to 0-5 on the season, losing to Crawford (4-1) on the road Friday night.
Taylor Alcorn rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries to help pace Crawford’s attack. Teammate Josh Harris added 82 yards and a pair of TDs on the ground for the Rams.
The Coyotes go on the road to meet undefeated Garden County (5-0) on Friday night in a Class D2 District 10 game.
