Leyton falls in five sets

The Leyton High School volleyball team came up just short in a thrilling five-set match on Thursday night.

The Lady Warriors lost 25-15, 25-22, 21-25, 18-25, 16-14 to their rivals to the north. Leyton dropped to 13-4, while the Bulldogs improved to 14-5.

“As always, our match with Bridgeport came down to the wire in the fifth set,” said Leyton coach Jodi Craig. “Despite the loss, we came out a better team having played this quality of team.

“We could have given up after losing the first two sets, but the girls persevered and fought back to win the second and third sets,” Craid added. “After getting down in the 5th set,we were able to hustle our way back but just couldn’t get the win.”

For Leyton, Natalie Cruise, Kristine Barnett and Diedra Waite each had a dozen kills and teammate Katie Higgins added 11.

Waite chipped in seven blocks and setter Taylor Berner had 45 assists.

The Lady Warriors return to the court on Tuesday, traveling to Haxtun for a triangular that also includes Creek Valley.
