Leyton splits pair of matches

as host of triangular

The Leyton volleyball team downed Hay Springs 25-16, 25-12, but lost to Mitchell 15-15, 25-21 on Thursday.

"Mitchell put up a great block so our hitters had to adjust," said Leyton head coach Jodi Craig. "We did a good job of this, just not early enough in the second game. Although our hitters had some great swings on the ball, we didn't get it terminated.

"Mitchell was a scrappy team that didn't let much drop on their side of the court," Craig added. "I thought we played fairly strong defense throughout both matches tonight. We will use this as a learning experience and be ready to bounce back on Saturday for the tournament in Mitchell."

Cheyenne Nickel had five kills against Hay Springs, while teammate Taylor Berner had 17 assists, Diedra Waite added 12 digs and Natalie Cruise chipped in 11 more.

Against Mitchell, Kristine Barnett led the Lady Warriors with eight kills. Waite had seven aces from the service line and Nickel added three more.

"Diedra Waite had a great run of serves in the first set early on and Cheyenne Nickel had a nice run toward the end of the second set," Craig said. "Taylor Berner did a great job of getting to the ball and making a concerted effort in giving the hitters a quality set."
