Warriors suffer first loss of year

The Leyton High volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season as it dropped a close four setter to Paxton in Dalton on Tuesday night.

The Lady Warriors’ record slipped to 4-1 on the season, while the Tigers remain perfect at 4-0. Leyton dropped the contest by set scores of 23-25, 20-25, 25-23, 18-25.

“As always, Paxton played really smart and were very scrappy defensively,” said Warriors’ head coach Jodi Craig. “I thought we served well overall, but simply missed serves at crucial times.”

Cheyenne Nickel put in a strong performance as she led the team with 12 kills. She also had three blocked shots, a pair of aces and 16 digs. Kristine Barnett had 10 kills. Hope Dykman was strong at the service line as she made just one error in 21 attempts and had four aces.

Defensively, Diedra Waite had five blocks and 34 digs. Barnett led the team in digs with 46, while Natalie Cruise had 39 and Taylor Berner 20. Berner also had 33 assists.
