As summer wanes, Dalton embraces fall

Annual festival set for this weekend

Dalton will celebrate the changing seasons this weekend as the village hosts the Dalton Fall Festival.

This year marks the 88th anniversary of the celebration.

Jessica Hurt, a member of the organizing committee, said the event is held to bring the community together – and this year, that means food, games, music, contests and a parade.

The festival kicks off Saturday morning with a senior citizens' coffee and rolls, and is scheduled to conclude with the Dalton Volunteer Fire Department feed on Sunday evening.

In between, there's bound to be something for everyone, Hurt said.

Throughout Saturday, vendors will be selling crafts, food and other goodies – food vendors will be set up in the village's park and crafters will be in the Dalton High School gym.

New this year, the annual parade will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Hurt said the shift from a nighttime parade was made to increase participation.

Participants in the parade have until Friday to register, she added.

Events on Saturday will also include a car show, bingo, silent auction and tractor pull. The Nebraska vs. Miami (Fla.) football game will be shown beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Legion Park for a community viewing, with a barbecue at 5:30 p.m. and followed by a musical performance from Brooke McRoberts at 7:15 p.m. at the high school.

The Dance at Big V's will begin at 8:30 p.m. and continue until midnight, with live music throughout the night by Stone Gate Road.

A community church service will get things started on Sunday, and the Boy Scout pancake feed is set to follow at 11 a.m.

A game of "Family Feud" is scheduled for 1 p.m. Hurt said the questions and answers have been supplied by community members.

"It's hilarious," she said.

Throughout the entire weekend, almost everything is free – with a free-will donation – except for the vendors, Hurt said.

"You can come and pretty much fill your belly all day long for what you want to pay," she said with a laugh.
