Raider cross country teams fare well in Colo., Chadron

The Sidney High cross country teams competed at two meets over the weekend.

On Friday, the Red Raiders challenged the competition at the 38th Annual Liberty Bell Cross Country Invitational in Littleton, Colo. On Saturday, the road took them to Chadron for the Cardinals' annual invite.

Silver Creek (Colo.) proved best among the boys' teams at Littleton with the host team coming in second and Falcon (Colo.) third. The top three among the girls were Centaurus (Colo.), Valor Christian (Colo.) and Steamboat Springs (Colo.).

The Sidney girls finished in 10th place as a team in a deep field at the Liberty Bell meet with Erin Lindeman leading the way for the locals. Lindeman finishd in 21:11 over the 5k course for 32nd place overall.

The other six runners for the Lady Raiders included Jami Flores (21:33), Chantal Riggs (21:34), Mia Hernandez (22:15), Abby Heller (23:05), Charlie Brockhaus (23:22) and Jolene Oliverius (24:45).

The Sidney boys ended the day at Liberty Bell in 15th place that included a strong performance by Brenner Keane, who ran the course in 18:27. Jacob Schaub and Ryan Aurich were neck-and-neck at the finish. They stopped the clock in an identical 18:48, though Schaub edged out Aurich at the line.

Mitch Porter was just a few seconds behind his teammates in 18:53. The other Raiders included Michael Banaszak and Keaton Wakefield, who both finished in 19:06. Collin Brauer's time was 19:37.

At Chadron, the Raiders employed a different lineup of varisty runners. The girls finished in sixth as a team while the boys came in third. The first-place team among the girls was Todd County (S.D.) with Gering second and Hill City (S.D.) third. Gering took the top boys prize with Mitchell getting the nod for second.

Genessa Schilz was first to cross for the Sidney girls in a time of 24:16 for 19th place overall. Clara Kokjer was next to finish for the Lady Raiders in 25:48. The next four Raiders finished closely together with Katie Gilmore (26:11) edging teammates Brenda Maytorena (26:19), Hannah Langley (26:22) and Amber Brekhus (26:28).

A tightly bunched group of boys led by Kaden Vowers helped lead the Raiders to their third-place finish.

Vowers finished in 19:57 for 20th place while Ryan Birner (19:58), Will Castner (20:00) and Logan Uhlir (20:07) were right on his heels. Dante Peterson (21:11) and Logan Jones (22:29) were just a few places back.
