New pool construction, other projects underway

The first phase of construction for the Sidney Outdoor Aquatic Center began Thursday morning with contractors leveling the ground of the projected site in Legion Park.

According to City of Sidney Park Superintendent Tom Von Seggern, after the ground is leveled, excavation of the site will begin.

"A water truck will be out there to settle the dirt and dirt during construction so it doesn't affect the nearby neighborhood," Von Seggern said. "There will also be barricades put in today to keep people from driving on the dirt road next to the construction."

The aquatic center will include a lap pool, leisure pool with lazy river, a slide and other water features. The complex will also provide locker rooms, a concession stand and a pump room.

The facility is scheduled to be open by May 24, 2016 – just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Another addition to Legion Park includes the newly remodeled tennis courts that will officially be open for use Friday afternoon. The two courts are located to the east of the Cheyenne County Community Center.

Construction on the two sand volleyball courts began in May after the removal of the Sidney skate park. However, the sand volleyball court project has been delayed due to the ground being unlevel. Because of lack of funding and budget cuts, the skate park wasn't able to be relocated this year.
