Birmingham made Sidney-to-Washington trip to find home with ill girl
Chloe Cheneby, a 13-year-old battling a life-threatening metabolic disorder in Washington, fell in love with Birmingham, a 6-month-old Golden Retriever, Gordon Setter and Bernese Mountain Dog mix.
The only problem: Birmingham was at the High Plains P.AW. (People for Animal Welfare) shelter in Sidney.
Sybil Prosser, the president of High Plains P.A.W., said she was contacted by the girl's mother, Kim Krasne, about adopting the puppy two months ago.
"The family found him on petfinder.com," Prosser said. "It's a website that hosts a lot of rescues, it's kind of a one-stop shop because you can search by location or by breed. The family found Birmingham and reached out about adopting, but we don't organize out of state adoptions."
Krasne explained that her daughter was involved with Make-A-Wish and that her wish was to get another dog. With the help of the Make-A-Wish organizations in Washington and Nebraska, Cheneby's wish for Birmingham was granted earlier this week.
Sally Harris, a local Make-A-Wish volunteer wish granter, helped transport Birmingham to Denver to fly via Alaskan Airlines to be delivered to Cheneby and her family.
"The two Make-A-Wish organizations made all of the travel arrangements," Harris said. "They even sent a kennel and a small gift for the puppy to make the trip comfortable. I've never worked with the High Plains shelter before, but this is just such an exciting thing to be a part of."
Harris added that it's very common for Make-A-Wish organizations in different states to work together for a good cause.
Prosser said the process was longer than they hoped because of all of the coordination to get Birmingham to Washington, but overall it went smoothly.
"I think it's important that people realize if they want a certain kind of dog they don't need to buy one, they can simply search for a specific mix on websites for adoption," Prosser added. "We have a lot of awesome dogs waiting for homes. If more people would take a second to look in or out of their area for a rescue they will find an amazing dog."
