Successful harvest season begins

Harvest season has begun in Cheyenne County.

Jennifer Jurgens said last weekend, two fields' worth of wheat was harvested on her family's farm, seven miles east of Hunstman.

"It was beautiful cutting weather," she said. "A nice breeze and warm, not extremely hot. We couldn't have asked for better weather."

When the grain was delivered to the Scoular Company in Sidney, the family was told it was the first load of the season.

Jurgens said custom cutters from Scehmper Harvesting, out of Holdrege, were tasked with harvesting the fields – and it was completed nearly a week earlier than usual.

"We were able to begin cutting earlier," she said. "It's usually [Aug.] 15-18 before we get to start cutting."

Jurgens attributed the early harvest to getting the crop in early.

"That was key," she said. "We got ours in early, and we were thankful about that. That's what I think really helped."

She added it's a relief to get the grain in, and she hopes other farmers are successful with any work that still lies ahead.

"It's always a relief off a farmer's mind when their crop is done," she said.
