Beginning tonight, there are three major high-school all-star sports events on tap for this weekend involving several area athletes. Each event selects outstanding 2015 graduates of Nebraska high schools to participate.
First up is the Mid-Plains Area All-Star games that will be held at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium in North Platte on Friday evening. Leyton High School graduate, Cody McKay has been selected to play in the boys’ game while Creek Valley’s Jill Behrends will suit up in the girls’ contest. The girls game is set to begin at 6 p.m. CDT with the boys’ game to follow about 7:30.
McKay, the Warriors leading scorer last season, will play for his high school coach Gary Oltmann on the Black Team. The boys’ Gold Team will be coached by Kolby Hamilton of Sandhills-Thetford.
Behrends was Creek Valley’s biggest threat from downtown as she led the Storm with 44 3-pointers made last season. She was also the Storm’s second leading scorer. She will play on the Gold Team which will be coached by Mullen’s Bec Ray. Nathan Stienke of North Platte St. Patricks will head up the Black Team.
On Saturday, Jake Sager and Chance Anglin of Sidney High School will compete in the 57th Annual Shrine Bowl of Nebraska football game.
The annual contest, which has been held every year since 1958, raises money to benefit Shriner’s Hospitals for Children and Shrine Hospital transportation funds. The game is an all-star event in which two teams are divided geographically between north and south. Anglin and Sager will play for the North team.
The game will be played on Saturday at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field in Kearney at 2 p.m. CDT. The Shrine Bowl Parade will precede the game at 10 a.m. in downtown Kearney.
Anglin, a running back and defensive back, piled up 2,705 career yards on 442 carries during his stellar Raiders career. He has played varsity since he was a freshman. Anglin had his best season in 2013 when he rushed for 1,296 yards. In 2014, despite missing four games due to injury, Anglin amassed 711 yards on just 75 carries.
Sager moved back to Sidney as a junior and was a major player on both the offensive and defensive lines. He was part of the group that blocked for Logan Lewis and Anglin in 2013 when the pair combined to run for more that 3,300 yards. On defense, Sager was among the team leaders in tackles the past two years with 99.
Todd Ekart, the Raiders’ head coach for the past five seasons and now the new head man at Gering, will be on the North sidelines as an assistant coach under head coach Larry Martin.
The annual Panhandle Prep All-Star Game is also scheduled for Saturday at Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff with several local players having been selected to play. The girls’ game will open the action at 5:30 p.m. with the boys to follow.
Among the locals selected are Ashley and Maddie Stafford of the Sidney Red Raiders. Ashley will play with the Red Team while twin sister Maddie will be with the opposing Blue Team. Lady Raiders teammate Savanna Rosenbaum will join Maddie on the Blue Team.
Lane Harvey, the four-year starting point guard with the state runner up Sidney Red Raiders, will join the Red Team in the boys’ game. Harvey will be opposed by the Warriors’ McKay who is playing in an all-star game on back-to-back nights. He is among the nine players chosen to play with the Blue Team.
