Kid's Fishing Day set for Saturday

Just in time for warm weather, the pond at Sidney's Legion Park is officially stocked with 380 fish in preparation for Kid's Fishing Day on Saturday.

The event will be held from 8:30-11 a.m. and is open to children ages 12 and younger. Participants should bring their own rods and reels, but some will be available to borrow. There is no entry fee.

Experienced instructors will help education kids about casting, untangling fishing line and putting bait on the hook. Bait and refreshments will be provided to participants.

Kids will also be able to reel in prizes by catching the fish with the color-coded tags. There are eight fish that are specially marked that entitle the young angler to a gift cards. This year, the prize amounts range from $25 to the grand prize of $100, depending on the color of the tag. Other prizes will be given out during the event such as hats, goodie bags and two bicycles.

Steven DeWitt of Cabela's asset protection department helped Brian Hahle with Pleasant Valley Fish Farm of McCook stock the pond with catfish, trout, large mouth bass, yellow perch and crappies this week.

"No Fishing" signs have been placed around the pond reminding the public that angling is not permitted at the pond until after the event has been completed on Saturday.
