Teammate Preslie Allen medals in three events for Sidney
OMAHA, Neb. – After reaching the Class B state track meet for the fourth straight season, Sidney High School high jumper Savanna Rosenbaum was hoping to gain one more experience to remember her high school track career by – a state medal.
While Rosenbaum, a senior, accomplished what she set out to do on a tense final jump at 5 feet, 2 inches, the Red Raiders were powered largely by a group of underclassmen who are likely dreaming of greater glory for next year.
The Sidney girls finished the 2015 NSAA State Track and Field Championships in 15th place with 16.5 points, which left them just over 40 points shy of the state champion Holdrege Lady Dusters (57 points). The finish among the top schools was razor close as Platteview earned 56 points for the runner-up plaque, York 55, Grand Island Northwest 52 and Ord 48.
"We got lots of medals for boys and girls and that was huge," said Red Raiders' head coach John Ganser. "And what great kids they are. They work hard, they're a pleasure to be around, they get good grades and they train and compete hard."
As she battled in the final field event of the 2015 championships, Rosenbaum had sailed along through each height until the bar reached 5-2. She missed on her first two attempts at the height that would assure her a medal. But with one more try left, the state veteran easily cleared on her final attempt. After landing, Rosenbaum rushed over to the fence where a hug from high jump coach Pat Welch awaited.
"Last year it took five foot to medal but I had a feeling it was going to be 5-2 this year," Rosenbaum said. "On my second try, I psyched myself out because the bar was still wiggling. On my third try, I knew I had to attack really hard and drive and finish."
Rosenbaum is headed to Hastings College and will be part of the Broncos' track and field team.
"I'm really excited to be continuing in track," Rosenbaum said. "So finishing up my high school career is not as sad as it might be normally."
Junior Preslie Allen also had a big day as she medaled in three events after being shut out in 2014. Allen finished third in the 800, sixth in the 400 and ran a leg in the 4x400 relay that finished seventh. The medal-winning relay team also included juniors Abby Heller, Genessa Schilz and freshman Natalie Radcliffe.
"Getting third in the 800 was a really good feeling," Allen said. "I went in there hoping I could get a sixth or something, so I was really excited to get third with just a second off my best. Getting three medals is a lot better feeling than finishing one place out of the medals like last year."
The Raiders also qualified three sprinters for state in addition to making the grade in the 400-meter relay. Sidney will lose two of its sprinters for next season as Gabby Addleman and Sara Von Seggern graduated last week.
Addleman represented Sidney in the 100-meter hurdles, 100-meter dash and 400 relay. Though she did not make the finals in her individual events, she teamed with Von Seggern, Heller and Kelly Von Seggern for sixth in the relay. Sara Von Seggern missed the finals in the 200, but still earned a medal in the relay – her final state race.
The Sidney youth movement was most visible in the 4x800 relay. Though the Raiders did not medal in the opening event of the meet, the freshmen foursome of Kara Birner, Charlie Brockhaus, Julia Evertson and Chantal Riggs all plan to be back next season.
"We'll lose some quality athletes from this team and we'll miss them," Ganser said. "But we have a big group coming back so we're all looking forward to that."
