CHEYENNE COUNTY INVITE: Potter-Dix sweeps team titles in Sidney

Leyton, plus Sidney and CV split squads, take part

Less than a week before the District D-11 track meet, the Potter-Dix Coyotes proved to be in top form as they captured both the boys' and girls' competitions at the Cheyenne County Invite at Sidney High School on Friday.

The Coyotes amassed 144 points in the boys' race to edge host Leyton with 114.5. Sidney and Creek Valley, which both split its squads between the Cheyenne County and the Bayard B-C-D, finished fourth and seventh, respectively.

The Potter-Dix girls piled up 192 points in that side of the competition to outpoint Leyton, which garnered 123. The Raiders were fourth, with the Storm taking seventh.

Potter-Dix

The Coyotes won seven events in the boys meet led by Kelsey Rozelle, who won the 100 meters, the high jump and long jump. He was 0.02 seconds from winning the 200 meters. Cooper and Coby Hicks also mined gold as Cooper turned back the field in the 400 and Coby won his second straight pole vault. Coby was runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles.

In the pole vault, the closest competition for Hicks were teammates Sam Bogert and Noah Nelson, who finished second and third respectively.

Other winners for Potter-Dix included Jake Johnson in the 800. The 1,600-meter relay team was also first. The relay was comprised of Johnson, Cooper Hicks, Bogert and Cameron Purcell.

The Lady Coyotes had eight event winners including two relay teams. The winning 400-meter relay squad included Hope Shepard, Savannah Shaw, Payton Franklin and Trinity Langley. The winning 4x800 foursome had Regyn Hicks, Presley Christensen, Ryley Hicks and Langley.

Ryley Hicks was also tops in the 3,200 meters and pole vault and third in the mile. Sister Regyn was first across the line in the 100-meter hurdles with Payge Hoffman just behind in second. Regyn was a close second in the 300 hurdles with Hoffman third and Franklin fourth.

Alexus Rozelle was far and away the best in the discus as her toss of 116 feet was more than 20 feet beyond her closest competitor. Rozelle was second in the shot put. In the high jump, Anna McLaughlin earned 10 team points by edging Leyton's Abbe Draper by two inches. Ten more points came the Coyotes way with Langley's victory in the triple jump. Sara Gingerich was fourth.

Leyton

Jessica Houk was too fast for the competition in the sprints as she capatured the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Houk edged the Coyotes' Hope Shepard in both races by 0.19 and 0.35 seconds, respectively.

Kaitlyn Berner was another multiple-event winner for the Warriors with her victories in the 800 meters and long jump. Berner was runner-up in the triple jump. Cheyenne Nickel was also a winner when she was the first to pass the line in the 400. Teammate Dani McKay was just over a second behind.

The Lady Warriors also put together the winning combination in the 4x400 relay, which included Berner, McKay, Houk and Nickel.

In the boys' meet, the Dye brothers were too much in the distance races with Kort taking the mile and Rhett winning the 3,200 meters. The Warriors' effectiveness over the long haul was enhanced by Aaron Schrotberger's fourth in the mile and Jacob Frerichs runner-up finish behind Rhett Dye in the two-mile eun.

In the field events, Jacob Ernest had a big day by picking up a double in the throwing events. He won the shot put with a toss over 45 feet. His mark of 136 feet in the discus was nearly five feet better than his closest pursuer. Zach Hellie also had a strong throw to put him in third.

Though Cody McKay was just a few inches short of victory in the triple jump, his performance was boosted by Drew Brenner's fourth-place jump. Leyton also had multiple placers in the 400 (Teghan Osborne and Max Suess) and 800 meters (James Rushman and Triston Hume-Gartner).

Creek Valley

The diluted Storm team did not win any events, but had multiple placers in a pair of events.

William Payton was third in the shot put with Josh Schievelbein sixth. Schievelbein also took fifth in the pole vault. Freshman Pierce Leef was sixth after jumping the same height as Schievelbein.

With several of the Creek Valley girls in Bayard for the B-C-D meet, Chandra Smith was the only one to score points with her fourth in the 100 meters. She also made the finals at 200 meters.

Sidney

The Raiders had a slimmed down squad as well with the bulk of the team in Bayard. The Raiders boys were led by their victory in the 4x100-meter relay. That group included Keaton Wakefield, Jo Jo Medina, John Bramer and Spencer Rolls.

While the Raiders girls didn't win any events, they had several events in which they had multiple medal winners.

Elea McKnight and Kristina Davis, both freshmen, were fifth and sixth in the 300 hurdles. Davis was third in the high jump with Megan Rapp taking fourth. The Raiders' girls doubled up in the long jump as well with Sidney Sunderland and Abbey Mills finishing third and fourth respectively.

Other Raiders medalists included Emily Mika (3rd at 100 meters), Emma Spacheck (4th in the shot put) and Brenda Maytorena (4th in pole vault).

Next up for all local schools are their district tournaments. Class D-11 will be held in Morrill on Wednesday, while the B-6 meet is at Ogallala on Thursday. Both are scheduled for 9 a.m. starts.
