Mother’s Day snowfall possible
While temperatures crept into summer-like weather earlier this month, rain and colder climates have dominated this week’s forecast.
Temperatures for the rest of the week are predicted to drop below the 50s. On Mother’s Day, you can expect snow, rain and wind with temperatures as low as 25 degrees.
According to the Cheyenne, Wyo., Weather Forecast Office, the reason behind the rain and cooler temperatures is a powerful system moving from California.
“Because of the intensity of the system, it produces a lot of moisture from the gulf, and that rainfall can potentially turn into snow for the Sidney area,” said Rob Cox of the Cheyenne office. “It really only looks like Sidney will get about an inch of snow, or it could pass and just rain.”
Once the rain and snow move out of the picture, it could lead to a hard freeze due to the rapid temperature decrease.
“If the snow turns to rain, one thing to be concerned about is below freezing temperatures on Monday morning,” said Cox. “A helpful reminder for people is to make sure they cover plants in case of a freeze.”
Cox said that seeing a snow storm in May is not unusual or record breaking. Record lows for this time of year have dropped to 20 degrees, while highs have exceed 90.
Warmer temperatures rising to the mid 60s and 70s are expected for next week.
