Surber named artist of the month

Margie Surber, of Sidney was selected the Cheyenne County Art Guild's "Artist of the Month" for May.

While Surber has had no formal art education, she has taken various workshops over the years from Jan Pippit, Paul Adkinson, Patsy Smith and Judy McElroy to name a few.

"I enjoy playing with colors, which is from my years as a florist," said Surber. "A lot of art principles are used such as line, design and color."

Many of her techniques come from experimentation with various mediums such as water color, pastels, oil and acrylics. While she uses different mediums her favorite is pastels.

Her work has been displayed in Alliance, Holyoke, the Cheyenne County Art Guild's spring show, the county fair and the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs show where she received an honorable mention award.

Surber has been a member of the Cheyenne County Art Guild for more than 25 years, where she has been serving as the club's treasurer.

"I enjoy the fellowship of the club members and learning new techniques and ideas that we share."

Surber's painting will be on display at the Sidney Public Library during the month of May.
