SCOTTSBLUFF TWILIGHT INVITATIONAL: Raiders' relay team breaks school mark

Sidney's 4x800 squad tops mark by 3 seconds

SCOTTSBLUFF – For 23 years the record stood. If it doesn't fall again in the next 30 days by the same group who broke it on Friday, it just may last another two decades or more.

With the help of a third record-setting day this season by the Sidney High boys' 4x800-relay team, the Red Raiders garnered 105 points to finish third at Twilight Invitational at Bearcat Stadium in Scottsbluff on Friday. Rapid City Stevens (S.D.) took top honors with 122 points while host Scottsbluff was second with 119.

Stevens also took the girls' title in convincing fashion with 165 points, with Kelly Walsh (Wyo.) (134), Scottsbluff (104.5), Sidney (89) and Gering (47) completing the top five.

The Raiders' long-distance relay team, which medaled in sixth at state last season, continued to reach new heights on Friday. While the names Jason Mitchell, Billy Michie, Curt Swanson and Doug Benzel have had their names in the record book since 1992, their long run came to a dramatic end as each member of the 2015 squad ran a personal-best split.

The old mark of 8:11.50 was erased by nearly three seconds (8:08.65) by Jachob Wiedeburg, Hayden Lienemann, Brody McKnight and Logan Uhlir. Later McKnight and Lienemann medaled at 800 meters while Wiedeburg ran a personal best in the mile. Uhlir, who felt sick to his stomach after an all-out effort in the relay, struggled in the open 800.

"It was great having the time on the big board which let me know where I was and what I needed to do," said Uhlir, who ran the anchor leg. "I knew we had a chance to get the record, but I stopped thinking about it after the first lap. I knew we had it if I kept running."

Meanwhile in the girls' camp, there were no shortages of strong performances either. Though they had no event winners, the Raiders' depth was a big help to their point total. Savanna Rosenbaum, a three-time state qualifier in the high jump, cleared the 5-foot bar to finish third. Though she was razor close to clearing 5-4 earlier this season, Rosenbaum said she was pleased that she is going in the right direction and consistently scoring team points.

Gabbie Addleman twice ran a personal best in the 100-meter hurdles and finished second. She managed her best day despite hitting two hurdles in the finals.

"It all felt better today, but I think I could have gone even faster if I hadn't hit those two hurdles," said Addleman, who hit the fourth hurdle with her knee and the final hurdle with her ankle. "I three-stepped the first three hurdles but I got thrown off a little when I hit that first hurdle. I'm trying to get where I can three-step them all. I'm almost there."

Besides the 4x800 relay team, the boys boasted two other event winners. Jake Heeren continued his outstanding season with the shot put as he added another win to his credit. Heeren was clearly the class of the field as his toss of 54-01.25 was more than six feet better than the runner-up.

Alex Linneman scored another win in the long jump when he scored his second personal best in the past three meets. With a leap of 21 feet, 10 inches, Linneman won the event by nearly a foot.

"It felt more like a 19 or a low 20 so when I heard 21, I thought, 'wow,"' Linneman said. "I actually changed my takeoff foot. Last year, I started with my left and went to my right after I got injured. Now I hurt my right foot a little so I've gone back to the left."

The Raiders boys' point total was also boosted by four runner-up finishes. Linneman was the Raiders' highest point earner as he was second in the 100 and 200 meters. He also ran a leg in the 1,600-meter relay (with Michael Banaszak, Lienemann and Hunter Secrest) that was third.

Banaszak added to his proficiency at 400 meters when he was second in the open 400, while Lienemann was runner-up in the open 800. Brian Rolls beat all but one in the discus field.

Other Raiders boys to medal included Mitch Porter in the high jump and triple jump and Derek Robb in the pole vault. The 4x100 relay team of Michael Muggli, Chance Anglin, Derek Robb and Coby Haas crossed in third.

The girls again had three medalists in the pole vault with Jami Flores taking third, Jolene Oliverius fifth and Jasmine Jallen sixth. As usual, the Von Seggern sisters gobbled up points in the sprints with Kelly taking fourth in the 100 and Sara sixth. Sara was third in the 200. Sara and Kelly teamed with Addleman and Natalie Radcliffe to take third in the 4x100 relay. Radcliffe, a freshman, was also strong in the long jump with a fourth place.

Junior Preslie Allen was a strong point earner for Sidney in the middle distances by scoring runner-ups in both the 400 and 800. When Allen teamed with Abby Heller, Radcliffe and Rosenbaum in the 4x400 relay, she had another second-place finish. In the longer distances, Erin Lindemann crossed the line third in the two mile.

For those who have qualified, the next Raiders meet will again be at Scottsbluff for the annual Best of the West meet. The action is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Bearcat Stadium.
