MITCHELL TRACK & FIELD INVITE: Sidney boys, girls sweep team titles

Depth provides boost at Mitchell

MITCHELL – Powered by a depth that provided multiple placings in 10 boys' and girls' events combined at the Mitchell Invite on Friday, both Red Raiders' track and field teams were the easy winners on a perfect day to be running outdoors.

The Raiders' girls finished with 140 points, which far outpaced runner-up Mitchell at 94. Gering (77), Alliance (66) and Burns (Wyo.) (42) completed the top five. Mitchell was also runner-up in the boys' competition as it tallied 108 points to Sidney's 131. Like the girls order, the top five were completed by Gering (78), Alliance (68) and Burns (Wyo.) (63).

The Lady Raiders path to victory was aided by placing three in two separate events, including a top-three sweep of the pole vault. Sidney also had three point earners in the 100 meters. In the vault, Jolene Oliverius finished on top with Jasmine Jallen and Jami Flores right behind.

"That ties a personal best (8-0 feet) so hopefully I can get 8-6 next week," said Oliverius, who first set her best height at the Sidney Invite. "I was thinking today, 'why not start thinking about 9-6, you know that's about what it would take to get to state.' Instead, I have to just keep thinking about moving forward."

While the girls yielded the top spot to Ashley Turner of Burns in the 100, the Raiders earned three top-six medals. Kelly Von Seggern was second, Sara Von Seggern fourth and Gabbie Addleman sixth. Kelly Von Seggern and Turner raced side-by-side for nearly the entire race before Turner pulled away late.

The Von Seggerns also added punch to the 200 with Sara crossing in second and Kelly in sixth.

The Raiders boys scored multiple times in six different events including three times in the long jump. Sophomore Alex Linneman won the event while smashing his personal record after spending the previous week perfecting a new plan of attack. Chance Anglin and Josh Schaub medaled in fifth and sixth.

"I went up to a 10 stride versus an eight stride because I wasn't getting enough speed from the eight step," Linneman said. "I knew how fast I could go and I just knew the eight step wasn't getting me up to full speed. I've been working on it since Monday. I was trying to get it down well enough so I wouldn't scratch."

Linneman and Anglin also teamed for a double score in the 100. Linneman was second behind Jackson Dickerson of Chadron, and Anglin was sixth. Linneman's productive day included running second in the 200 and being a part of the winning 4x400 relay. Linneman was joined by Josh Schaub, Michael Banaszak and Hunter Secrest in the 400 relay. Banaszak also took fourth in the 200.

The Sidney boys also double-dipped in the 800 and 1,600 meters. Jachob Wiedeburg and Hayden Lienemann swapped places with Wiedeburg winning the 800 and Lienemann crossing first in the mile. Logan Uhlir also placed in the 800 in sixth and Brenner Keane was fifth in the 1,600. Lienemann was also runner-up in the 400.

"They let Hayden have a chance at the mile today so it seemed like a good idea to put me in the 800," Wiedeburg said. "It's good for me though. I think it's great training for the mile."

The success Sidney showed in the 800 translated well to the 4x800 relay where the Raiders broke a meet record for a second consecutive time. After smashing the Ed Moore Invite record at Ogallala last week by six seconds, the foursome did it again. Wiedeburg, Brody McKnight, Uhlir and Keane erased the old mark at Mitchell by five seconds.

"Before Ogallala, we had no idea of what the record was. We just ran out as best as we could and the record fell," Wiedeburg said. "Today we saw what the record was and we knew what it would take to do it and so we went for it. I think it was a best split for most of us."

The final event in which the boys scored twice was the triple jump, with freshman Mitch Porter taking third and Garrett Deer fourth. The field events were boosted by Brian Rolls, who scored in both throwing events. He was second in the discus and fifth in the shot put.

Porter added additional points to the Sidney cause by finishing fourth in the high jump. Derek Robb took the bronze in the pole vault.

For the Lady Raiders, senior Gabbie Addleman joined Oliverius with gold when she won the 100-meter hurdles. Addleman won the race for the second week in a row after spending much of last season on the sidelines.

"I had a back injury last year so I couldn't hurdle until the last two weeks," said Addleman, whose winning time was 16.94. "My goal this year is to go to state. Honestly, I think I'm there in terms of time already, but I'm hoping to get down to the low 16s.

"I want to be three stepping but I not there yet. I'm going to need a little more practice," Addleman added.

In the middle and distance races, the Sidney girls continue to be consistent point earners. Genessa Schilz had another high finish in the 400, taking second. Preslie Allen matched that in the 800 with her runner-up finish. In the distance races, freshman Charlie Brockhaus was third at 1,600 meters and Erin Lindeman second at 3,200.

In the field, Savanna Rosenbaum continued to be a consistent point gainer with a runner-up finish in the high jump. She actually jumped the same height (4-10) as the winner, but lost out on least misses. Abby Heller added to the Sidney point column by taking fourth.

Annalise Lecher added more than three feet from her effort at Ogallala to earn second in the discus. Natalie Radcliffe, another freshman, was fourth in the long jump.

The Raiders are back on the track at Gothenburg on Thursday for a meet that begins at 1 p.m. MDT.
