Trey Arellano, an eighth grader at Sidney Middle School, earned All-American status by virtue of his performance at the AAU National Duals at HyVee Hall in Des Moines, Iowa the weekend of April 4-5.
Arellano, who wrestles at 95 pounds, earned his place in the national duals meet by virtue of his 5-0 record at the AAU qualifier in Kearney a week earlier. He was one of 20 members of the Nebraska team that faced squads from all over the United States.
At the national dual meet, Arellano went 6-2 to earn Silver Status All-American. The Nebraska team finished fourth overall.
“He won his first six matches and then was put in the gold bracket,” explained Trey’s father Travis Arellano who also coaches with the Sidney Wrestling Club. “He had gone to this meet the past two years and finished 4-4 to just miss All-American status. This year he had the goal of winning at least five and he did that.”
While Arellano only had to win his matches in the individual competition at Kearney to earn a spot at national duals, he also competed in duals a day earlier. During the dual competition, Arellano won all six of his matches for an 11-0 record for the weekend.
