Scholarships available for high school, middle school student camps

The South Platte Natural Resources District has two scholarship opportunities for students wishing to attend one of two camps focusing on natural resources education this summer.

Each year the Nebraska Section of the Society for Range Management, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and IANR and the Cooperative Extension Service host a learning experience for high school students wishing to increase their knowledge of natural resources.

The 52nd Annual Nebraska Range Youth Camp will be held at the State 4-H Camp in Halsey from June 8-12. Young people at least 14 years of age, but not older than 18 by Oct. 1 of the camp year are eligible to participate.

The camp provides education to young people in Nebraska who are interested in rangelands and practical range management. Other purposes are to:

• Develop an awareness of the extent, importance and value of Nebraska’s range resource.

• Develop an appreciation of the value of optimum range and livestock management.

• Encourage leadership and good rangeland stewardship by Nebraska youth through increased awareness of natural resources.

• Develop an awareness of information sources for evaluating management alternatives.

The program emphasizes plant-soil-animal relationships, range livestock management, ranching, economics, and wildlife habitat management. The week’s emphasis is on field and classroom activities designed to provide management education. Recreation and group competition will be an important part of the camp program.

The South Platte NRD supports District youth by providing scholarships covering the $325 camp registration. Scholarships are first offered to one in each county (Kimball, Cheyenne and Deuel) within the district, or if there are not applications from each county, students in other District counties may earn scholarships.

Scholarship applications for Range Camp are due to the SPNRD by May 15. The District will review applications and inform students if they receive one, then forward the Range Camp registration.

For younger students, Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts are excited to offer Adventure Camp about the Environment (ACE) again this year. The NRDs are encouraging middle school students interested in the outdoors, to sign up for this educational and action-packed camp. ACE is for students who have completed 6th, 7th and 8th grades in the 2014-2015 school year.

ACE is hosted at the State 4-H Youth Camp near Halsey from June 14-17. It’s organized by Nebraska Natural Resources Districts (NRDs).

The four-day adventure camp gives students an opportunity to dive into many different hands-on activities. Each activity educates our youth on Nebraska’s water resources, different soil types, trees in the forest, and range and grasslands. Students will also learn about the state’s wildlife and why it’s important to protect our natural resources.

Camp cost is $190 and registrations are due by May 29.

The District is offering scholarships to students from within the District. The scholarship pays for the camp registration fee. Scholarships are offered to students residing within the District (Kimball, Cheyenne, Deuel counties). Students’ families will be responsible for transportation to and from the camp.

Students wanting to receive an ACE Camp scholarship must apply to the SPNRD by May 15.
