'Dogs battle at Holyoke track event

The Peetz Bulldogs track teams competed at the Holyoke Invitational on Saturday, with the boys taking third among the 12 teams competing. The girls team, despite having only six athletes on the roster, still managed to score 20 points for an 11th-place finish.

"Though we're still a long way away, it was nice to see a couple of our relay teams in qualifying position for state," said Bulldogs head coach Scott Scorensen of his boys 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams. "It was a pretty good meet and over the next few weeks I expect to see a lot of improvement."

Sedgwick County won the boys' competition with 138 points. Wray was the big winner in the girls' meet with 170 points.

Among the highlights for the boys' team, Cody Wilson knocked a half second off his personal best in the 400 to easily win the event. Wilson's time of 53.72 was nearly three seconds faster than runner-up Logan Redabaugh of Merino.

Casey Barrett took bronze in two events with a third in the 100-meter dash (12.44) and was also third in the long jump (17-11 1/2). Bradey Holtz was four inches shy of Barrett as he took fifth in the long jump.

Freshman Logan Sircy also had a productive day with a fourth in the 1,600 meters (5:21.09) and third in the 3,200 meters (12:25.09).

In the field events, Garrin Cox placed in both throwing events. He hurled the shot put 38 feet, 5 inches to finish fourth and tossed the discus 103-9 – good enough for third.

Among the highlights for the girls was a fourth place by Abby White in the 800 meters and a third by Payton Swedelund in the 3,200 meters.

In the field events, Jodi Schumacher earned a personal best in both the discus (84-6) and shot put (24-8 1/2).

Peetz is back in Holyoke for a meet at 1 p.m. Thursday.
