GRANT, Neb. – After qualifying for state last year, the Creek Valley High golf team opened its season with mixed results in a dual meet with Perkins County at the Pheasant Run Golf Club in Grant on Monday.
After losing its top gun from last season in Lane Godfrey, the Storm are left with a young team that hopes to fill the gap. Perkins County won the two-team event with 184 strokes to Creek Valley's 207. Brett Godfrey was the low scorer for the Storm with a 47 over the par-36 nine-hole layout.
Behind Godfrey were Austin Rowley (52), Wyatt McMillen (54) and Ben Cabela (57). Freshman Michael Rahe scored a 66 while competing in his varsity tournament. Rowley and Cabela also teed it up on varsity for the first time.
"It's always good to get the first meet under your belt," said Storm head coach Cyd Hanson. "I think several of them will feel a lot more comfortable now when playing in competition. Especially since Austin, Ben and Michael haven't played a varsity match before this. This is a good experience."
For Godfrey, who had been faring a little better in practice, still hit his irons consistently well all day, but struggled with the flat stick. He had 18 putts over his nine holes, which included missing a few inside of three feet. Godfrey missed his putt on three makable birdie opportunities.
"It was an OK day for the first meet of the year," Godfrey said. "I think if I get to work on my short game, that's going to be the best way for me to shave some strokes off my score."
Rowley was also hitting his irons well and found himself around most of the greens in regulation. That's when his struggles began.
"I felt pretty good with most of my game but I really need to work on my short game," Rowley said.
Creek Valley next travels to Bayard on Tuesday for an 18-hole match at 9 a.m.
