Velma Jean Vass, 72 of Thornton, Colo. and a former Sidney resident died Thursday morning, March 19, 2015 at the Tru Care Center in Louisville, Colo.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tues., March 24, 2015 in the First United Methodist Church in Sidney with the Rev. Tom Hyde officiating. Graveside services and burial will in the Chappell Cemetery at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials have been established to the First United Methodist Church and TRU Care Center (Hospice Care Unit).
Friends may call from 1 to to 7 p.m. Monday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.

Velma Jean (Metzger) Vass was born in Laurel, Mont. on July 13, 1942. She grew up on a farm east of Laurel, where she attended Allendale County schools and then she transferred to Laurel High School for her high school years. She graduated in 1960. In 1962 she moved to Ogallala. She met and married Eugene Vass on June 19, 1963. One daughter Vicki June and one son Daniel Eugene were born to this union of marriage. They moved from Brule to Sidney in the early 70's where they live for several years. She volunteered as a Boy Scout leader, 4-H leader, and delivered Meals on Wheels. In 2002 they moved to Denver to be closer to family.
Her hobbies were sewing, knitting, ceramics, and reading as well enjoying her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband Eugene Vass; her children's families Vicki and Robert Maestas, Daniel and Kristy Vass all of Thornton; one sister Leona Brewer of Billings, Mont .; two brothers Ervin Metzger of Laurel, Mont. and Donald Metzger of Lander, Wyo. and many nieces and nephews and grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Jacob "Jake" and Eva Metzger; two brothers: James Metzger and Melvin Metzger; brother–in-law Cleo "Dick" Brewer; nephew Roger Vass; her in-laws Henry and Pauline Vass; niece Cheryl Love and her granddaughter Katie Maestas.
Holechek Funeral Home and Cremations in Sidney is serving the Vass family.
