The Shrine Bowl committe announced this morning that Jake Sager and Chance Anglin of Sidney High School have been named to the 57th Annual Shrine Bowl of Nebraska football game.
The annual contest, which has been held every year since 1958, raises money to benefit Shriner's Hospitals for Children and Shrine Hospital transportation funds. The game is an all-star event in which two teams are divided geographically between north and south. Anglin and Sager will play for the North team.
This year the game will be played on Saturday, June 6 at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field in Kearney at 2 p.m. CDT. The Shrine Bowl Parade will precede the game at 10 a.m. in downtown Kearney.
Anglin, a running back and defensive back, piled up 2,705 career yards on 442 carries. He has played varsity since he was a freshman. Anglin had his best season in 2013 when he rushed for 1,296 yards. In 2014, despite missing four games due to injury, Anglin amassed 711 yards on just 75 carries.
Sager moved back to Sidney as a junior and was a major player on both the offensive and defensive lines. He was part of the group that blocked for Logan Lewis and Anglin in 2013 when the pair combined to run for more that 3,300 yards. On defense, Sager was among the team leaders in tackles the past two years with a total of 99.
Todd Ekart, the Raiders head coach for the past five seasons and the new head coach at Gering, will be on the North sidelines as an assistant coach under head coach Larry Martin.
