Unfortunately for Mitchell High School, the Tigers were just what the doctor ordered for a Sidney team coming off a tough, come-from-behind victory the night before.
The Red Raiders stepped on the gas early en route to a 74-24 shellacking of Mitchell on Saturday night at the Cabela's Athletic Facility. The win pushed Sidney's record to 19-3 – a school-record for wins in a season – while Mitchell slipped to 9-12.
"I was really happy with the way we played four quarters of high-intensity basketball," said Sidney head coach Erik Kohl. "Coming off a big win against Chadron (the night prior), this was good for us. We wanted to work on some things in particular. We played a complete game for all four quarters tonight and I was real happy with our high-low post defense."
The Raiders sprinted out to a 22-5 lead after the first quarter and led 43-10 by halftime. The intensity never changed in the second half, as Sidney opened the third period on an 11-0 run to go up 55-10 and trigger a running clock per the Nebraska high school "mercy rule."
The Raiders had pulled ahead 62-19 by the end of the third and then proceeded to outscored Mitchell 12-5 in the final stanza to put the finishing touches on the easy win.
Tyler Wintholz led Sidney with 22 points and teammate Cutter O'Connell chipped in 14.
The Red Raiders wrap up their regular season with a home game on Friday night against Alliance (8-12).
"The Alliance game will be a big one for us," Kohl added. "A win gives us a chance to be the No. 1 seed at the district tournament, it keeps us in contention for a wild card for the state tournament and it gives us a chance to be undefeated all season at home."
