POTTER – The Potter-Dix High girls’ basketball team jumped out to a big first quarter lead and went on to a 48-19 win against visiting Banner County on Friday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Lady Coyotes (15-4) open sub-district play Tuesday with a 7 p.m. contest against Sutherland in Ogallala.
Banner’s MaKenna Dahlgrin scored the first point of the game, but it was all Potter-Dix after that. The Lady Coyotes ended the quarter with 17 straight points to take a commanding lead. Savannah Shaw knotted the game with a free throw, then added a jumper for a 3-1 Potter-Dix advantage. An Audrey Juelfs fast break bucket off a steal made it a 5-1 game. Juelfs and Shaw added four points each in the final four minutes of the opening quarter, while Anna McLaughlin and Alexus Rozelle chipped in with two points a piece.
Banner (2-16) came back with back-to-back baskets to open the second quarter, getting layups from Savannah Jordan and Dahlgrin to cut the Potter-Dix advantage to 17-5. The Lady Coyotes ended the frame with a 9-0 run as they took a 26-5 advantage at the break. McLaughlin’s layup with 2:37 left in the half started the spurt, which was capped on a Juelfs trey with 58 seconds left in the quarter.
The Lady Coyotes outscored the Lady Wildcats 22-14 in the second half.
Juelfs led all scorers with 13 points, while Shaw added seven for the Lady Coyotes. Dahlgrin led the Lady Wildcats with five points.
