Sidney School Board OKs 2015-'16 calendar, new teacher contracts

The Sidney School Board approved the 2015-'16 school calendar at its meeting Monday night.

The board also recognized the "All Children Experience Success" behavior program and the January "Students of the Month." Additionally, it approved several new teacher contracts for the next school year.

For 2015-'16, the first day of school for students will be Thursday, Aug. 13. The board also OK'd an extended Christmas break that will span from Dec. 21 through Jan. 4. Other important dates include a spring break from March 25-28 and the final day for students being May 19.

Gene Russel, vice principal of North and South Elementary, reported on the progress and success of the ACES behavior program in Sidney Public Schools.

Last year, Sidney Public School staff members spent eight days training on how to implement multi-tiered levels of positive behavior support for students and proactive classroom management procedures. These staff members include: Brent Jeffes, Belinda Westfall, Melissa Ross, Kelle Dillehay, Becky Haddix, Jenn Schneider, Lindsey Diemoz, Angie Jacobsen, Carla Brauer, Sheri Ehler, Sarah Wilson, Brandon Ross, Trudi Glassburn, Brad Noonan, Chris Arent, Tess Plummer and Paul Newland.

Recognition and awards were presented to the following January students of the month: seventh grade, Jaylee Shaw; eighth grade, Alec Johnson; 10th grade, Brianna Whitman and Sami Kaus; 11th grade, Hunter Diedrich; and 12th grade, Lane Harvey.

Austin Jacobson was also recognized for his leadership and involvement as a Red Zone leader.

In other business, the board approved the resignation of sixth-grade teacher John Girard, who will be the new western Nebraska representative for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Teaching contracts for Angel Flohrs, Jennifer Ramsey, Danica Olson, Andrew Newman, Zach Barrett, Cassandra Swanson, Tina Langrell, Kaela Cole and Wayne Meyer were approved for the 2015-'16 school year.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m.
