Sidney wrestlers wrap up unbeaten season, school record

Considering they went undefeated in duals this season, perhaps it was fitting that the Sidney Red Raiders' wrestlers finished their regular-season schedule with a dominating dual performance over district rival Gering Friday night.

While battling the Bulldogs on their home mat, Sidney outpointed Gering 61-18 to finish the 2014-15 season a perfect 11-0 in one-on-one team matches. On their way to victory, the Raiders won four matches by forfeit and came out on top in six of the nine contested matches.

The Raiders have not gone undefeated in duals since the 1995 squad went 9-0. The '95 team continued its success into the post season with seven wrestlers earning a medal at state with one state champion.

"We had some good success since the holiday break but the post season is here and we want to finish the right way," said Raiders' head coach John Ganser. "Our dual mark ... means to me an undefeated season rather than a record."

Patriac Hays (182 pounds) got the Raiders out to a perfect start as he picked up six-team points by pinning the Bulldogs' Weston Hutson early in the second period (2:37). The Raiders were then awarded 18 more points after Brandon Lulf, Cody Hofrock and Dominic Beyer were each awarded forfeits.

Kaden Vowers and Colton Peckham continued Sidney's unbeaten streak as they each won their matches. Vowers silenced Luciano Palomo by pin in 2:26 at 106 pounds while Peckham won a major decision (11-2) over Trayton Johnston. Vowers earned six points for the Raiders while Peckham added another four.

Aaron Tovar was the first to score for Gering with a quick pin over Devon Schilz. Jack Feddersen helped regain the momentum with a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Ricardo Hernandez for three Sidney points at 126 pounds. Brett Jaggers (132) then followed by dropping Christopehr Tarr by fall in 1:52.

While Derek Robb normally competes at 138 pounds, he stepped up to wrestle at 145 with the absence of Michael Muggli due to illness. The step up in weight class had little effect on Robb as he won his 38th match of the season against no losses.

Logan Sherman stepped up from junior varsity 132 to take Robb's place at 138 pounds and was pinned by Kaetlyn Todd in 1:45. Zach Borges then continued his strong season at 152 by making quick work of Devin DeLosSantos with a pin in 1:11. Gering was able to win the final contested match of the day as Quentin Timblin (160) took down Coby Haas by fall at 1:42. Colden Harrison picked up the final six points with a forfeit at 170 pounds.

"For the most part it was a good night of wrestling for us at Gering as we continue to be offensive," Ganser said. "The district objective is to qualify as many wrestlers as possible and as best as possible for the state meet in Omaha."

The Raiders are at districts on Friday. Preliminary matches get underway at 4 p.m., with an all-day session set for Saturday.

The top four finishers at each weight quality for the state meet in Omaha on Feb. 19-21.
