MAC GIRLS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Lady Warriors cruise, earn date with CV

Top-seeded Potter-Dix also earns berth in semifinals

The defending MAC champion No. 2 Leyton Lady Warriors took their first step towards a repeat with a 42-32 win over the No. 7 Banner County Wildcats in Dalton last night.

The Warriors took an 11-3 lead after one quarter and upped the margin to 26-5 at the half.

With the win, the Warriors move into the semifinals and a date with No. 3 Creek Valley. The pair will meet up at Sidney Middle School on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Last season, the Warriors' upset the top-seeded Storm in the semis.

Leyton's scoring attack was led by seniors Kaitlyn Berner and Shaela Jenkins, who dropped in nine and eight points respectively. Diedra Waite contributed with six points and Dani McKay five. Berner (8) and her younger sister Taylor Berner (5) led Leyton in steals. Jenkins led all rebounders with 11.

Potter-Dix 57, Minatare 25

The host Lady Coyotes defended their No. 1 seeding in the opening round of the MAC Tournament with a 57-25 win over eighth-seeded Minatare Indians on Monday night.

Potter-Dix (10-2) kept the Indians (0-10) winless by jumping out to an 18-7 lead after the first quarter and extended the margin to 33-9 by halftime. The Coyotes' third-period lead stood at 35 points (51-16) before Minatare whittled three points off the margin in the final frame.

Anna McLaughlin and freshman Audrey Juelfs led the way offensively for the Coyotes with 10 points apiece. Juelfs completed a double-double by dishing out 10 assists. Savannah Shaw added eight points with Dawson Sharman and Brooke Glass each contributing six.

Cortney Lewis ruled the boards for Potter-Dix with a team high 10 rebounds. The thieves were led by Juelfs and Shaw with five and four steals respectively.

The Coyotes will next meet Bayard in the the semifinals, which is scheduled to tip at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Sidney Middle School.

Bayard 70, Garden County 25

The No. 4-seeded Bayard Tigers trounced No. 5 Garden County 70-25 at Bayard Monday night.

Chellani Parriott led all scorers for the Tigers with 22 points while Miah Vera added 17.

Also reaching double figures for Bayard were Kaylie Fiscus with 11 and Jessi Smith with 10.
